Abstract
In the production of uranium monocarbide, UC, a mixture of carbon with uranium or uranium oxide is carburized at below 1600 DEG C. in a container consisting of at least one metal oxide having a melting point above 1600 DEG C. which has substantially no reaction with any of the reactants below 1600 DEG C. UO2 is ballmilled with lampblack, and the resulting mixture heated in a sintered corundum container, in an induction heated vacuum furnace, at 1500 DEG C. for 2 hours. The UC is cooled in H2.
