Abstract

935,856. Charging cupola furnaces. W. E. DUNN. July 31, 1962 [May 2, 1961], No. 7577/61. Class 51(2). A charging hopper disposed below the charging opening 1 of a cupola furnace 2 comprises semi-conical shells 3, pivoted at 4 and having arms 8 with counterweights 10 and arcuate members 13 formed with upper and lower sets of teeth 12 and 18, respectively. Pawls 11 engage teeth 12 and pawls 17 engage teeth 18 to lock the shells in the closed and open positions, respectively. The pawls may be dispensed with and the shells may be moved manually or by power-operated means. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the shells are pivoted about a common central axis and seat on recesses in the cupola wall. In this case they act as explosion doors if necessary. A final modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), has quarterspherical shells.
