Abstract

935,766. Developing respiration. E. GIORDANO. Oct. 25, 1960 [Oct. 27, 1959], No. 36635/60. Class 81 (2). Apparatus for developing in a patient a predetermined respiratory cycle comprises three or four sets of electric lamps mounted in a predetermined pattern and representing, respectively, an inhalation phase, an exhalation phase and one or two breath-holding phases, and a switch device actuated by an electric motor to energize each set of lamps in succession. The switch device comprises a commutator drum 5 which is rotated by an electric motor 6 and carries tracks consisting of conducting and insulating segments or projecting cams, each track being contacted by a brush 4a-4d connected with a lamp 3a-3d disposed behind a window 2a-2d in a board 1 which is vertically arranged. Current from a source 8 is supplied to the lamps through a time switch 9, 9a and the drum, each lamp lighting up when the appropriate brush contacts a conducting portion of the appropriate track. The lamps may be arranged on the board in lines defining a rectangle or a figure eight. The commutator tracks are so disposed that the lamps light up or are extinguished one by one or in groups in a clockwise direction on the board to indicate when the patient should inhale, exhale or hold his breath. A lamp 11 at the centre of the board may be connected with a contact 13 which periodically contacts a tooth on a wheel 14 which is rotatable with the drum shaft so that the lamp winks to induce sleep.
