Abstract

935,487. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 30, 1960], No. 44764/60. Class 100 (1). Apparatus for aligning a sheet 9 selectively in any of a number of desired positions relative to a printing, punching or sensing station 5 comprises a plate 11 having a number of registering channels 12, 13, 14 and 15 therein, each channel having a reference face 19 corresponding to one of the desired positions, rollers 3, 4 which receive each sheet from feeding devices (not shown) and feed it over the plate 11, and means to produce a difference of air pressure between opposite surfaces of the sheet so as to deflect an edge thereof into a selected channel, said rollers 3, 4 being effective to bring the deflected edge 16 into aligning contact with the reference face 19 of the selected channel. Each channel includes a leading face 17 and suction boxes 24, 25, 26, 27 are connected to the faces 17 by holes 20, 21, 22 and 23. The suction boxes 24-27 are connected by piping to a distributer 28 including a rotating vane 35 which connects each box in turn to a pump 38. Each of the pipes to the boxes 24-27 is vented to the atmosphere before the next is connected to the pump and the drive of the distributer is coupled to the drive of the apparatus 5 so that each pipe is vented after the printing &c. operation. The continual feeding of the sheet 9 causes the deflected leading edge 16 of the sheet to pass over the face 17 until it engages the face 19, when the rollers 3, 4, which feed at a rate greater than would be required for continuous feeding, slip on the sheet. In other embodiments (not shown), a blower may be used to positively remove the edge 16 after printing &c., Figs. 2 and 3, or a plate may be located above the plate 11, Fig. 4, and provided with holes which are connected via a distributer to a suction pump. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 (not shown), the sheet 9 is aligned with reference to its trailing edge. Specification 518,783 is referred to.
