Abstract
<PICT:0935431/III/1> <PICT:0935431/III/2> An apparatus for the treatment of multiphase liquid systems having a continuous liquid phase comprises a tube through which the phases (liquid/liquid or liquid/solid) flow in an overall co-current direction, and a pulsing unit which superposes on the co-current flow, longitudinal oscillations to cause repeated flow reversals and turbulence. The apparatus is especially employed for contacting a liquid with a particulate solid phase, e.g. such as in washing, leaching, extraction, chemical reaction or as in Specification 935,432, to induce crystal growth. The oscillations may have a frequency of 10-200 cycles/min. and an amplitude at least 5 times the bore of the tube, whereby the average rate of movement is at least 5 times greater than it would be without oscillation. The apparatus (for crystallizing) may be as shown in Fig. 1, where a liquid bearing solid crystals flows from inlet 1 to an outlet 3 through jacketted tubes T1, T2. Pulsations are applied by the diaphragm D under the action of pump P. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 5, a portion of the tube 51 is flexible and is surrounded by a liquid filled jacket 52 to which pulsations are applied by a pump P.
