Abstract
935,379. Exhaust silencers. GARRETT CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 32568/59. Class 7(2). A sound attenuating device comprises a conduit having pairs of inwardly extending auxiliary walls 34, Fig. 5, the walls of each pair being interconnected at their inner ends by auxiliary strip-like walls 36 which define on each side a passage within the conduit, open at both ends for fluid flow. The attenuator 20 Fig. 1 e.g. of stainless or aluminized steel is fitted to a turbine outlet 22. The radial depth of channels 40 and spacing between adjacent walls 34 may be approximately one-quarter and one-tenth respectively of the mean wavelength of the attenuated sound. In a modification the auxiliary walls may be perforated by openings having a diameter approximately two-fifths of the distance between auxiliary walls. The spacing between the inner conduit wall and the striplike wall may be varied along the length of the conduit or in further embodiments may be varied as shown in Figs. 10, 11. A helical baffle structure may be provided in which the helices rotate in either direction and the baffles are of varying dimensions or tapered.
