Abstract

934,627. Plug boards and two-part couplings. SEALECTRO CORPORATION, and S. T. DEAKIN. March 11, 1960 [March 17, 1959], No. 9176/59. Class 38 (1). An electric circuit selector comprises upper and lower insulating plates 1, 2 on which are mounted rows of contacts 9, 8 respectively, the plates being spaced by pillars 3. Each row is constructed by bending a silver-plated copperberyllium blank to channel form, the side walls of the channel being divided into pairs of opposed contact sections and the base of the channel opposite each pair of sections being cut to form a hooked tongue 15 which extends lengthwise of the channel. A row of contacts is assembled on a plate 1 or 2 by passing the tongues 15 through holes 6 and moving the channel lengthwise to engage the limbs 15a of the tongues with the portions of the plate surrounding the holes. The rows of contacts are then locked in position by contact strips 21, 24 which are soldered or welded to the last tongue 15 of the rows and which provide means for connecting the rows to an outside circuit. A cover-plate 18 is secured to the plate 1 by means of the pillars 3 and the limbs 15a of the tongues are clamped between the plate 1 and the coverplate 18. Contact between vertically aligned contact sections is made by means of connecting pins 20 which pass through holes 19 in the coverplate, Fig. 2. In a modification, Fig. 6, the cover-plate 18 is replaced by a plate 30 in which there are slidable insulating bushes 32 containing a socket 34 attached to a contact pin 35. A spring 36 urges the bush upwardly, but the pin is retained in the depressed position by the engagement of a contact 8 in a groove 38 in the pin. The socket 34 is for the reception of a test plug 39, and the upper part of the pin may be coated with insulation material so that when the pin is in the chain-line position, connection is made between the socket and contact 8 only. In Fig. 7 the contacts 9 are earthed by means of a metal plate 1a and the lead wire 41 of a screened lead is connected to a contact pin 40. A further modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), comprises a jack plug connected to two separate wires. In Fig. 9, separation and screening of the individual contacts 8, 9 is provided by partitions fitted in the manner of egg-box partitions. Each partition consists of a sandwich of a metal layer 62 between two sheets 63 of insulating material and the layer 62 is earthed. The single tongues 15 may be replaced by a pair of tongues and a contact tag may be formed by the end of the channel base. The contact sections may be approximately semicircular in form to provide a cylindrical socket.
