Abstract
The invention comprises quaternary ammonium compounds of diamines of the formula <FORM:0923114/IV(a)/1> where R is a fatty alkyl group having 8 or more carbon atoms (preferably the alkyl chains corresponding to the mixture of the chains of fatty acids derived from tallow and coconut oil), and complexes between iodine and a non-ionic surface active agent stabilised by an iodine complex of the above quaternary ammonium compound (see Group VI). The quaternary ammonium compounds are preferably those formed from the diamine and a halogen compound such as methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl chlorides, bromides and iodides, n-, sec-, iso- and t-butyl, n-amyl and benzyl chlorides.ALSO:A bacteriocidal composition comprises a complex of iodine and a non-ionic surface active agent (an iodophor) stabilized by a quaternary ammonium compound of a diamine of the formula <FORM:0923114/VI/1> (in which R is a fatty alkyl group of more than 8 carbon atoms) with a halogen compound such as an alkyl or benzyl halide. The stabilized iodophor may be further modified by the addition of a solubilization agent such as an ethylene glycol monoalkyl ether, and a buffer such as phosphoric acid.
