Abstract
921,900. Luminescent screens. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 20, 1960 [May 23, 1959], No. 17868/60. Class 39 (1). Apparatus for rendering luminescent a portion of the inside wall surface of a bulb 13, e.g. of a tuning indicator tube, comprises a stepwise conveyer 14, a bath 8 for applying adhesive to a luminescent foil 3 and means for introducing an individual piece of foil 12 cut to size into a bulb and urging the foil on to the inside wall thereof, the latter including a movable shaped tongue 11 conforming with the inside contour of the bulb and provided with suction means for holding the piece of foil 12 on to the tongue. The tongue 11 is secured to a lever system 18, 20, 21 constructed to effect movement of the tongue both upwards and downwards and also to the wall of the tube. Suction is applied by a pipe 28 communicating with apertures 29 in the face of the tongue 11. The individual length of foil is cut off by a knife edge 31 co-operating with a notch 30 in the tongue. The foil comprises a luminescent material coated on or homogeneously mixed with a vaporizable carrier material such as a polyacryl or polymethacryl foil, or with a mixture of collodion wool, acetone and methyl acetate respectively, the carrier material being subsequently evaporated by heating. Nitrocellulose is used as an adhesive for gluing the foil to the bulb. As shown, a carrier foil is coated with luminescent material in the coating bath 4.
