Abstract
Particles of a primary emulsion of an oil in a hydrophilic liquid containing a thickening agent are encapsulated by a process wherein the primary emulsion is dispersed to form a secondary emulsion in a coacervating solution comprising a coacervating agent and an aqueous sol or solution of a gelable hydrophilic colloid at a temperature above the gel point of the colloid which is caused to coacervate and thus to coat the particles of the primary emulsion with a coating that may subsequently be hardened. Suitable thickening agents are materials which are substantially insoluble in the oil phase of the primary emulsion and which cause the external phase of the primary emulsion to have a surface which is lipophilic or at least less hydrophilic than water, e.g. acacia, tragacanth, methyl- and carboxymethyl-cellulose, magnesium aluminium silicate, polyglycols, glycerin and syrups. Suitable colloids are gelable, hydrophilic colloids, e.g. gelatine (preferred), agar-agar, albumin, alginates, casein, pectins, starch and fibrinogen. The coacervating agent may be an electrolyte e.g. salts having alkali or alkali-metal cations and organic or inorganic anions or a water-soluble liquid in which the coacervating colloid is less soluble in water. A conventional emulsifying agent may be used in the preparation of the primary emulsion and the coacervating solution may contain a thickening agent. Either or both phases of the primary emulsion may contain dissolved or suspended materials which confer on the product of the invention properties which render them useful as bactericides, fertilizers, plant growth hormone preparations, pesticides, additives to pre-mixed foods, e.g. vitamin preparations suitable for addition to dry cereal preparations, cosmetic ingredients and pharmaceutical preparations for oral, topical and injectable application, particularly for sustained or delayed release of the active material.
