Abstract

Membranes formed by the coacervation of a material comprising at least one gelable hydrophilic colloid having amino groups and peptide linkages (e.g. proteins and polyamines) are treated with an aqueous solution of one or more of tannic acid, gallic acid or di-gallic acid to improve their physical characteristics, in particular their impermeability to fluids. The membranes may be formed by simple or complex coacervation of one or more of the above colloids by any process and they may encapsulate solids, oils, hydrophilic liquid-in-oil and oil-in-hydrophilic liquid emulsions which may contain "active" ingredients which render the preparations suitable as fertilizers, plant growth hormone preparations, bactericides, pesticides, vitamin preparations, medicines and food additives. Treatment is preferably carried out subsequent to the gelling (e.g. by cooling) of the concervate under conditions of time and pH (generally acid) which allow the properties of the product to be varied. Specified colloids of the above type are gelatine, fibrinogen, polylysine and polyornithine. Specific examples relate to the treatment of: (a) particles of an aqueous solution of urea-in-corn oil emulsion encapsulated in gelatine with tannic acid, gallic acid and di-gallic acid; (b) a similar preparation comprising 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,8-octachloro-4,17-methano-3a ,4,7, p 7a -tetrahydroindan in place of the urea of (a) with tannic acid; (c) particles of an aqueous solution of chloral hydrate-in-mineral oil emulsion encapsulated in a complex coacervate of gelatine and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer with tannic acid. Specifications 476,869, 483,550, 573,678, 751,600, 911,483, 929,401, 929,402, 929,403, 929,408, and 929,409 are referred to.
