929,267. Turning threads. K. BURGSMULLER. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1958], No. 28649/58. Class 83 (3). A method and apparatus for " whirling " a thread or a plain polygon on a workpiece comprises driving the workpiece about an axis in one direction at a speed suitable for normal lathe operations and displacing the workpiece axially while subjecting it to the intermittent cutting action of a tool rotating eccentrically about said workpiece axis in the opposite direction. In a first arrangement a thread-cutting tool 27, Figs. 2 and 3, is arranged within a cylindrical holder 25a which is rotated about an eccentric axis 22 relatively to a workpiece 14 but in the opposite direction. The tool is moved axially relative to the work by a lead screw and the differential between the work speed and tool speed determines whether one or more " start " threads are cut. Plain polygons may be cut by the same arrangement. In another arrangement a chuck 29, Fig. 4, drives a workpiece 28 in the opposite direction to a rotary tool-head 40 carrying one or more cutting tools 39. The chuck spindle is provided with a lead screw 31 for moving the work axially and the lathe spindle 32 is connected by gearing to the rotary tool-head. The latter is adjustable to the inclination of the threads. Examples are given of relative rotational speeds between the work and tool-holder and also suitable cutting speeds.
