Abstract

929,030. Columns for contacting liquids with gases. HYDRONYL Ltd. Aug. 22, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960], No. 29534/60. Class 55 (2). In an absorption or like tower 1 filled with packing 2, such as ceramic, metal, glass, carbon or synthetic resin rings, descending liquid is deflected from the walls by means which make interrupted contact therewith and which, as shown, comprise annuli 5 of expanded metal, woven or knitted wire, or of moulded synthetic plastics material, of dished form and external diameter slightly greater than that of the column so as to form a push fit therein. When of expanded metal the annuli are so cut that their peripheries are in the direction of the short way of the mesh, giving a more complete line of contact with the tower wall. In a modification the annuli are replaced by a zone of packing elements of smaller size adjacent to the wall, provided by inserting a sleeve in the tower, filling the sleeve and the space around it with larger and smaller elements respectively, and raising the sleeve to repeat the operation.
