Abstract

Monomeric chloroacetaldehyde is produced by heating trimeric chloroacetaldehyde to a temperature of 100 DEG to 300 DEG C. in the presence of 0.1 to 20% by weight, with reference to the trimeric chloroacetaldehyde, of a carboxylic acid, the monomeric aldehyde formed being distilled of simultaneously. Specified acids are oxalic acid, terephthalic acid and halogenoacetic acids such as trichloroacetic acid; mixtures of the acids may be used. Examples are given, together with comparative results obtained using sulphuric acid and toluenesulphonic acid.
