Abstract
928,834. Removing canning from nuclear fuel. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. May 3, 1961 [May 3, 1960], No. 16026/61. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXII] A machine for removing the sheath 2 of a fuel element 4 comprises a structure 8 in which the element is supported by a guide 7, one end of the element being engaged by the thrust rod 6 of an hydraulic jack 5 mounted on the structure 8. Two cutting wheels 3 on the structure 8 symmetrically disposed around the sheath cut the sheath as it is advanced by the jack. In order to peel the cut sheath 2 away the rod 1 of fissile material the leading end of the rod abuts fingers 9 pivoted by links 10, 11 to supports 12 whereby as the rod is advanced the thrust on the fingers causes them to move apart against the bias of springs 13 and the cut portions of the sheath are bent away from the rod. Eventually, the rod passes between the fingers (Fig. 5, not shown). In modifications, not shown, the wheels 3 may be mounted on (a) ball and socket joints, (b) constant pressure hydraulic jacks, or (c) eccentric adjustable axes.
