Abstract

Carboxymethylated proteins are prepared by reacting the protein with a halogenacetic acid such as bromo-acetic acid at a pH of 9-12. The protein may be casein, soya bean, blood albumin, edestin, glutin, egg albumin, castor bean protein or globulin, any of which may first be oxidized, or it may be gelatin. The preliminary oxidation to remove undesirable sulphur compounds may be effected with hydrogen peroxide as described in Specification 648,927. The treatment with bromo-acetic acid may be carried out in the presence of magnesium oxide, or sodium hydroxide.
