Abstract

In a process for preparing crystalline polymers from monomers of formula RICH=CHORV where RI may be the same as or different from RV and both are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radicals containing up to 10 carbon atoms, polymerization is carried out at +50 DEG to -150 DEG C. in the presence of 4 to 25% by weight of the monomer of a catalyst of formula BF3[Y]n where Y is an electron donor compound and n is a whole number. Specified monomers are 1-methyl-2-methoxy ethylene and 1-methyl-2-isobutoxy ethylene. The electron donor may be an ether, ester or amine, the preferred catalyst being boron trifluoride etherate. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of solvents, e.g. toluene, pentane, hexane, heptane, diethyl ether and ethyl acetate. The products may be cast or moulded, and formed into textile fibres by melt extrusion. Specification 928,155 is referred to.
