Abstract

928,144. Injection moulding. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1962 [May 18, 1961], No. 18195/61. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIII] In a reservoir pad applicator, the attachment of the pad to a container, or to a holder for supporting it on a container, is effected by contacting one face of the pad with the molten surface of the container or holder during injection moulding of this part. Preferably, a low density polyethylene holder is moulded in the space between a fixed tool 16 and a movable tool 17. The tools are initially separated, and piston 21 is withdrawn into shield 20, to allow a foamed polyurethane pad 5 to be placed within the shield 20. After bringing the tools together, the piston 21 is advanced to compress the pad 5 between walls 8 and 24. Molten plastic is injected against the pad from four nozzles 18 and forms the ring-shaped holder 7. When the movable tool 17 has been withdrawn (allowing pad 5 to expand) stripper element 23 removes the holder 7 from the fixed tool 16. For holders of more rigid material, annular projection 12 may be modified or replaced by a screw-thread.
