Abstract
Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic s-trithiones are prepared from the corresponding aldehydes by running a solution of sodium thiosulphate into an acid, the aldehyde being either dissolved, emulsified or suspended in the acid or being added at the same time as the sodium thiosulphate solution, the acid being cooled except when the aldehyde reactant is formaldehyde when the reaction may be carried out at room temperature or slightly above. The acid is preferably concentrated hydrochloric acid. Examples describe the preparation of (1) trithioformaldehyde, (2) a -trithioacetaldehyde, (3) b -trithioacetaldehyde, (4) b -trithiobenzaldehyde, (5) b -trithioanisaldehyde, (6) b -trithiovanillin, (7) b -trithiopiperonal, (8) b -trithio-p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde.
