[Also in Group XXXV] The field excitation of a series-wound traction motor is reduced in one stage by shunting the field winding with an impedance, means being provided for regulating the power delivered to or derived from the motor. To prevent sudden increases in armature current, the shunt impedance is made inductive or the shunt branch comprises a resistor having a negative temperature coefficient. Thus, when a field-weakening operation is initiated, the actual change of flux is delayed until the power regulator has time to react to such operation.
