Abstract

A substantially smell-free glycol is produced by a process comprising distilling the glycol in a distillation column throughout which an inert atmosphere is maintained by an inert vapour during the distillation of the glycol, the volatile impurities being carried overhead with the inert vapour and the glycol being recovered as a side-stream below. Suitable inert vapours are, for example, steam and nitrogen. When steam is used to provide the inert vapour it may be admitted into the boiler as water either with the crude glycol vapour or separately. When steam is used as the inert vapour the glycol product may contain a little water and this may be removed by treating the product with dehydrating agents or by a further distillation according to the invention using a dry inert gas. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously and the boiler contents are preferably maintained in a slightly alkaline condition by the addition of an inorganic base, such as sodium hydroxide or an organic base, particularly an amine with antioxidant properties such as NN1-di-sec-butyl-p-phenylene diamine. Examples are given of the purification of propylene glycol, and dipropylene glycol.
