Abstract
927,684. Epicyclic gearing. MERRITT & CO. (ENGINEERING) Ltd. Oct. 16, 1961 [Oct. 20, 1960], No. 35986/60. Class 80 (1). In an epicyclic gear in which an annulus is engaged by two or more equiangularly spaced planet gears, the difference in the numbers of teeth between the annulus and planets being small, the planet gears gyrated by being journalled on two or more crank-shafts journalled in the planet carrier and driven in unison by gears including one which is coaxial with the annulus. An extension 21 of the shaft of a motor 10 has a gear 30 engaging two gears 31 secured to double throw crank-shafts 32 journalled in a planet carrier assembly 26, 27, 26 rigid with an output shaft 24. Bearings 42 on the crank throws 43, 43A support planet gears 41, 41A engaging an annulus 40 secured to the casing of the motor 10. Rotation of the gear 30 drives the crank-shafts 32 to produce gyration of the planet gears which engage with the annulus to rotate the planet carrier assembly at a reduced speed. In modifications the planet carrier may be held stationary and the annulus drive the output which may be a vehicle wheel. Three crank-shafts may be used and the gear 30 allowed to float. The gearing may be used as speed increasing gearing.
