Abstract

<PICT:0927273/III/1> <PICT:0927273/III/2> The invention comprises a method of filtering oils containing peptised solids in which a coagulant material is absorbed by material of large surface area per unit volume and brought into contact with oil, after which the oil, or a part thereof, is admitted to a filter of small pore size, e.g. an edge type filter. The coagulant, e.g. diethylene triamine, is absorbed in a fibrous mat 3 which is crimped and rolled, each convolution of the roll being separated by a backing of a plain sheet of similar material. The roll 3 is contained in a casing 2 having an inlet 1 and outlet 8 and an electrically heated jacket 4 surrounding it. A bracket 5 connects the casing 2 to the edge-type filter 7 which may also have an electrically heated jacket. The coagulant may be absorbed in a powder having an apparent density similar to the contaminated oil, e.g. diatomaceous earth or cellulose flours. The coagulator may be placed in a by-pass circuit so that only a proportion of the oil from it passes through the filter.
