Abstract

A modified hardenable epoxy resin is made by blending a siliconized epoxy ester made by reacting an unsaturated fatty acid ester with silicon tetrachloride (see Specification 889,800), with an epoxy resin derived from epichlorohydrin and a polyphenol, by stirring the components together at such a temperature that blending takes place readily. In a modification of the process, the siliconized epoxy ester before blending with the epoxy resin is reacted with an excess of a dry alcohol and the unreacted alcohol removed by distillation. The example describes the reaction of epoxidized soya bean oil with silicon tetrachloride, the product being blended with an epoxy resin derived from epichlorohydrin and bis-phenol-A and the mixture hardened by reaction with phthalic or hexahydrophthalic anhydride optionally in the presence of benzyldimethylamine or a -methylbenzyldimethylamine. Specifications 680,997, 681,001 and 681,991 also are referred to.
