[Also in Group XXXIII] An air inlet for a jet propulsion engine has a centre body and inlet lips, rotatable about one or more axes, connected to means for adjusting them so that their longitudinal axes are parallel or nearly parallel with the direction of flow of the rammed air. In Fig. 2 a centre body 1 with inlet lips 21 fixed to it by vanes 20 rotates about a shaft 2 carried on an arm 14. Surrounding a part of the rear of the centre body 1 is a fixed wall 26 forming a diffuser 27 leading to a chamber 28 which has a perforated wall 29. Pressures extend on the centre body in the duct 27 and chamber 28 cause it to take up a position with its axis parallel to the flow. If the centre body is also rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the shaft 2 vanes 30 are put in the chamber 28 to prevent peripheral flow. The duct and chamber may alternatively be formed between a surrounding wall and the inner surface of the inlet lip and pressures exerted in the inlet lip adjust the centre body and lips. In Fig. 4 the pressure difference between static tappings 47, 48 controls a servo-mechanism that operates a jack 40 rotating the centre body 1 and inlet lips 21. The jack may be arranged to operate on the inlet lips instead of the centre body. The centre body and inlet lips may be arranged to rotate independently of one another.
