Abstract

926,140. Typewriters &c. CREED & CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 41254/61. Class 100 (4). A line-at-a-time printer comprises a number of type rings 1 loosely mounted on a common, continuously-rotating driving shaft 2 to which they can be coupled, e.g. magnetically, each ring having a tooth gap 6 between each type face 5 with which gaps a toothed ratchet wheel 8 engages, and each wheel 8 being capable of being locked by a pawl 18 to stop rotation of its type ring 1 when the required type face is in printing position i.e. opposite a platen 25. On one face of each ratchet wheel 8 is a disc 14 with coded slip rings engaged by brushes 15. The pawl 18 associated with each wheel 8 is actuated by a magnet 17. For selecting a desired line of characters, a relay circuit is used to which is led the terminals of the magnets 17, brushes 15 and the input device which latter may be a keyboard, storage, perforated card or magnetic tape reader. When the printer is idle, the shaft 2 rotates but is not energized, so that it is not coupled to the rings 1. When the shaft is energized, the rings 1 and wheels 8 are rotated thereby. Setting of the circuits by the discs 14 causes the pawls 18 to be actuated at the requisite times, to stop the rotation of the rings 1 when the required type faces are opposite the platen 25. Aligning for impression.-When the rings are positioned for printing the desired matter, the shaft 2 is de-energized and holding magnets 21, 22 are energized.
