Abstract

924,809. Hand brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINEN - UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES.]. Oct. 11, 1961 [Nov. 11, 1960; May 20, 1961], No. 36487/61. Class 103 (1). A power-assisted handbrake, more particularly for motor vehicles, comprises a brake lever 1, Fig. 1, a power cylinder 6 connected to a source of pressure medium, a piston in the cylinder acting on the brake lever, a control valve 12 interposed between the cylinder 6 and the pressure medium source and having an actuating element 14 pivotally connected to the lever 1 and a brake-operating linkage 7 pivotally connected to the brake lever. The hand brake lever is in two parts 2, 3, the lever 3 being pivoted on a bracket 19 and pivotally connected to the lever 2 at 4. Abutments 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are provided on the levers 2, 3 respectively. A pawl 8 engages a ratchet 10 and can be released therefrom by a button 9. In a modification the valve is actuated through a Bowden cable. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a spool valve 32 is moved so that a land 41 abuts the shoulder 43 to interrupt the communication between a pump 33 and a reservoir 36. Fluid-pressure builds up in chamber 45 moving the piston 30 to apply the brake via linkage 62. An accumulator 50 is provided which is connected to the chamber 49 communicating with the chamber 45 through a bore 46 by means of a cut-in valve 53 which is opened by a push-rod 51 sliding up a slope 57. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the brake lever is in two parts 65, 66, pivoted together at 67 on an arm 68 secured to the casing 69. Movement of the lever 65 to apply the brake causes land 79 on a spool valve 74 to abut the shoulder 78, thus interrupting the communication between pump 33 and a reservoir 36 through groove 75, cross-bore 97, circular groove 77 and port 83. Fluid-pressure builds up in chamber 93 via passage 92 so as to move the piston 71 to the left which in turn moves the lever 66 to the left to apply the brake. An accumulator 50 is provided which is brought into communication with chamber 93 by a cutin valve 85 which is opened by push-rods 87, 88 and tilting element 86.
