Abstract
A composition producing heat when mixed with water comprises a finely divided alkali metal hydroxide and a minor proportion by weight, preferably 2 to 10%, of aluminium particles of substantially uniform size between 40 and 1000 particles per gram, the particles having smooth surfaces. Preferred particles are those having uniform cross-section along a central axis, e.g. wire cuttings. The composition may also contain an oxidizing agent such as sodium nitrate.
