Abstract
924,484. Continuous casting-machines. CONTINUOUS CASTING CO. Ltd. Feb. 19, 1962 [Jan. 6, 1961 ; July 26, 1961], Nos. 705/61 and 27147/61. Class 83 (1). A secondary cooling zone in a continuous casting apparatus comprises a shroud 15 within which the ingot is sprayed with a coolant, and in which a forced current of air flows continuously upwardly to one or more exhaust outlets adjacent its upper end. The air may be forced to flow by an exhaust fan &c. connected to the exhaust or by blowing air into the lower part of the shroud. The mould 10 is surrounded by an enclosure 11 which is maintained by compressed air from a source S, at a pressure greater than that in the shroud so that steam from the shroud is prevented from passing into the mould chamber and affecting equipment therein. Preferably the pressure in the chamber is greater than atmospheric so as to keep out smoke &c. produced above it by the casting equipment. The source S also supplies combustion air to the tundish heater. Air or steam jets may also be introduced at 30 to throw water off the surface of the ingot.
