Abstract

924,237. Boring earth &c. P.J.M.T. ALLARD. July 20, 1961 [July 26, 1960], No. 26298/61. Class 85. [Also in Group XXIX] An under-reamer comprises a body 1 adapted to be lowered into a borehole, means 3 on the body adapted to be pressed into engagement with the wall of the borehole to prevent rotation of the body, and means 6, 13, 14 to rotate the cutting tools 18 relative to the body. When the under-reamer is positioned in the borehole with the tools below a boring tube T an electric motor 7 is started to cause a pump 9 to supply hydraulic fluid to the system controlling the tools and the wall engaging means. The fluid passes through a valve 44 to cylinders 4 to urge the pads 3 into engagement with the wall. When the pressure in the cylinders exceeds a predetermined amount the fluid flows through valve 48 to drive the hydraulic motor 6 to rotate the tools. Fluid from the motor 6 passes through pipes 58, 59 to the upper end of a cylinder 5 to commence to open the tools. When the pressure in the cylinder 5 exceeds a given amount a valve 60 opens to discharge fluid to a reservoir 10. As the cutting resistance decreases the fall in pressure in the cylinder 5 permits the valve 60 to close and the tools to open further. If the pressure on the motor 6 becomes excessive a valve 50 opens so that a valve member 52b is moved to the left to discharge fluid from the upper part of the cylinder 5 through pipe 55 and to feed fluid from pipe 51 to the lower part of the cylinder 5 by the pipe 56 so that the tools commence to close until the pressure on the motor 6 falls sufficiently. When, during normal operation, the tools reach the fully-open position a switch 64 is operated to move the valve member 52b and open a valve 61 so that the tools start to close. When the tools are finally closed, a switch 66 is operated to set the valve 44 to retract the pads 3 from the wall, and the under-reamer is withdrawn from the hole. The tools may be used as a grab to remove the soil loosened during reaming.
