Weighing receptacles 3 are held in the forked ends 10 of the arms of a spider 2 mounted on a shaft 25 which is rotated intermittently through Maltese gearing 42, 43 from a drive shaft 41. An approximation to the correct weight of material is delivered to a weighing receptacle 3 at a dispensing station 4 and the next rotational step of the spider takes the receptacle 3 to a weigher. Lugs 8 on the side of the receptacle rest on pins 9 on the fork 10 and to steady the receptacle a lug 11 projects downwards from its bottom and has a slot 12 which a finger 15 enters which is pivoted on a vertical arm 13 and biased by a spring 14 to press the lugs 8 against the pins 9. To lower the weighing receptacle 3 on to the weighing plate 30 the shaft 25 is lowered, at which feet 32 on the receptacle rest on tapered pins 31 on the weighing plate and a pin 33 raises the finger 15 so that the spring 14 does not press down the weighing receptacle, while the lugs 8 are lifted clear of the pins 9. The raising and lowering of the shaft 25 are accomplished by a cam 40 which rotates with the drive shaft 41 and acts on a roller 39 on a lever 37 which engages a sleeve 35 on the shaft 25. The weigher controls a make-up device 6 which adds the correct amount of material to make up the correct weight at the next station. After this station, a level gear 18 on the end of a spindle 17, to which the fork 10 is secured and which passes through a bearing 16 on the spider 2, engages a toothed segment 19, subtending an angle of 180 degrees, and as the spider completes its movement to the next station the receptacle 3 is tilted so that it discharges its contents at the next station. A device comprising a disc 20, roller 23 and spring-biased lever 22 ensures the engagement of the bevel gear 18 and the segment 19.
