Abstract
An adhesive composition is produced by concurrently emulsifying rosin or a rosin derivative, e.g. polymerized rosin, pentaerythritol rosin esters, Spanish Gum, and a plasticizer, e.g. dicyclohexyl phthalate (both fused together beforehand if desired), in a dispersion medium, e.g. stabilized ammoniacal monoethanolamine oleate comprising the rosin constituent, if desired, and then blending the resultant emulsion with further plasticizers (if desired in molten condition) and with either further rosin constituent or a mixture comprising a synthetic resin emulsion, e.g. polybutyl methacrylate and rubber latex. Stabilizers, e.g. alginates, hydroxy cellulose ethers, bentonite, and a solvent for the plasticizer, e.g. xylol, carbon tetrachloride, butyl acetate may be added to the emulsion which may be coated on a subtrate as a film and dried at low temperature to produce a non-tacky layer activatable by heat to become tacky.
