Abstract

911,647. Electric heating platens. PARNALL & SONS Ltd. Sept. 26, 1960 [July 4, 1959], No. 23053/59. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group V] A heating platen in a vacuum forming machine incorporates an electric heating element or set of elements 12a-12c effective over a central area of the platen, and one or more separate elements or sets of elements 13a-13d and 14a- 14d disposed symmetrically about the central element or set of elements, each element or set of elements being independently controlled so as to provide a plurality of independentlyheated zones over the heating surface of the platen. The higher heat losses occurring at the edges of the platen may thus be offset, or the outer elements may be switched off to conserve energy when forming a small area of material. The heating elements are of the sheathed type and are secured to and spaced from a reflector plate by tie bolts 11 and angle sections 10. The elements of each set are connected in parallel by means of connector blocks 16 and connections are made through a conduit box 17 to three switches for the individual control of the sets of elements. The platen is mounted between a pair of arms 19 by trunnions 18, and is provided with four angle sections 20 forming a peripheral lip.
