911,425. Electrolytic cells. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 17, 1957], No. 39272/57. Class 41. [Also in Group II] In a cell for electrolysing aqueous solutions of alkali metal chlorides for the manufacture of chlorine and caustic alkali the anode comprises an operative surface of a noble metal of the platinum group or an alloy of two or more such metals and the electrical conductor inside the cell leading the current to such surface is made of titanium or an alloy consisting essentially of titanium. Specified noble metals are ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum. As shown in Fig. 2, which represents a vertical cross-section of a cell according to the invention, a mercury cathode 5 flows on the base-ptate 2. The anode assembly comprises a titanium sheet 8, the underface of which is covered with an electrolyticallydeposited coating of platinum (not visibly indicated in the drawing). Between anode 8 and cathode 5 is the space occupied by the electrolyte 6. As alternatives to electrodeposition, the facing of platinum constituting the anode surface may be applied by welding a thin sheet or foil of platinum to the titanium support or by roll-banding, cathode sputtering, vacuum deposition, metal spraying, rolling a platinum metal powder into the surface of the titanium sheet or painting the titanium surface with a conventional metallizing solution and subsequently heating in the manner practised in the ceramics industry. The invention is applicable to cells in which a diaphragm separates the anode from a fixed cathode.
