Abstract
910,047. Extruding cable sheaths. PIRELLI S.p.A.- April 26, 1960 [May 13, 1959], No. 14622/60. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for hot-sheathing an electric cable 8 with metal, particularly aluminium, comprises an extrusion press having a vertical cylinder 2 supplied with molten metal 6 which is forced to an extrusion nozzle 7 by compressed gas, insoluble in the molten metal, heating means 4a in the cylinder located immediately upstream of the nozzle and heating and cooling means 4b, 7b respectively in the nozzle. The press cylinder includes a refractory crucible 2 preferably of graphite, surrounded by a porous granular refractory material 5 and enclosed in a pressure casing 1. Argon under pressure is admitted through valve 19a and pipe 19 and acts on both the inside and outside of the crucible, through the porous material 5, to balance the pressure thereon. A gasexhaust valve 20 is provided. Electric resistance heating elements 4, 4a, 4b are controlled by a thermostat device 18 through a regulator. Cooling jackets 7b in the nozzle 7 are circulated with coolant through pipes 9, 10. The nozzle is made of corrosion-resistant metal such as titanium or of steel lined with a corrosionresistant metal or an enamel such as chromium boride or aluminium oxide applied by spraying. The extruded sheath 21 is cooled by water jets 11 and then reduced in a drawing die 12 and/or a rolling mill 13. The die may have a curved entry passage and a parallel throat disposed between annular cooling jackets 7b, 7c, Fig. 2 (not shown). Molten aluminium is supplied to the cylinder 2 through pipe 17 from a furnace as described in Specification 910,048. The supply is controlled by maximum and minimum level detectors 15, 14.
