A machine for producing conical hollow bodies from metallic sheet material by spinning comprises an annular work-holder 12 on which the sheet 25 is clamped near its edges by plates 23 over a rotatable forming tool 29 and means 8 for rotating the work and holder 12 at the same speed and in the same direction as the driving shaft 31 of the tool 29 whilst the sheet is pressed against the forming tool by a roller-type pressure tool 35 moved by mechanical or hydraulic means parallel to the surface of the former 29. The holder 12 is supported by four guide rods 10 slidably carried by the member 8 to cause it to rotate with the pressure tool 35. The heads 16 of the rods 10 may have their flat inner faces in contact with the clamped edges of the work to provide additional driving torque to the work. The tip 35 of the former 29 is removable and may be replaced by rounded or other shapes. The work-clamping plates 23 are spaced equidistantly around the work edges. In a modified form, Fig. 3, the work-holder 56 is driven by the forming-tool shaft 50 by gears 68, 70, a shaft 64 and a pinion 62 meshing with a toothed ring 60 formed on the annular work-holder 56 which is itself supported by rollers 54 engaged by a groove 57 formed on its periphery. Guide rods 42 extend at their upper ends through a ring 52 which also provides a bearing for the pinion driving shaft 64, the lower end of which is splined and slides through the gear-wheel 70 as the work-holder is moved downwards during the movement of the work under the action of the pressure tool, as previously described. The work-holder 56 may be carried by anti-friction bearings in the ring 52 instead of by the rollers 54 on the extended ends of the guide rods 42.
