Abstract

919,532. Universal Joints. DORMAN LONG (STEEL) Ltd. July 14, 1959 [Oct. 30, 1958], No. 34879/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A lubricating system for universal joints at the ends of a shaft 10 comprises annular lubricating boxes 42 encircling the shaft 10 on each side of a central bearing 31, pipes 50 and conduits 26 connecting the boxes 42 with surfaces of the joints to be lubricated, and a distributer 53 through which lubricant under pressure is supplied to the boxes 42 via pipes 49 and to the bearing 31 through a pipe 55. Each lubricating box 42 surrounds a collar 39, secured to the shaft 10, to form a circumferential oil groove 41 which is sealed by gland rings 44. The bearing 31 is mounted in a housing 32 which is carried by a cradle 33 supported by links 34. In a modification, shown in Fig. 6, the central bearing housing 32 forms a lubricating box which communicates with the parts of the joints to be lubricated through drilled passages 63; 62, 64.
