Abstract

918,991. Fluid pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. March 30, 1961 [March 31, 1960], No. 11337/60. Class 103 (1). A brake cylinder pressure limiting valve is controllable to a first position in which the setting is proportional to the vehicle load and to a second setting in which the setting is constant. The valve comprises two diaphragms 12, 13 urged apart by a spring 14, the diaphragm 13 having a central tubular member 15 venting to atmosphere, through chamber 21 and vent 22, at its upper end and co-operating with a double valve 16, 18 in the circuit between a brake cylinder pipe 19a and a brake pressure supply pipe 20. The space 23 above the diaphragm 12 is connected to an electromagnetically-operated twoway valve 25 which opens space 23 either to atmosphere through passage 26 or to a passage 28 having a continuous supply of fluid, the pressure of which is proportional to the vehicle load. The valve may be used with the fluid system of a composite fluid and dynamic braking system and under normal conditions the valve 25 opens space 23 to atmosphere and diaphragm 12 is against stop 29 allowing the spring 14 to act on diaphragm 13 which co-operates with the double valve to produce a lap condition of the valve 16, 18 allowing a reduced braking pressure from passage 20 to be maintained in the brake cylinder passage 19a. Should the dynamic brakes fade or fail, the valve 25 is automatically changed over to provide a load proportional pressure above the diaphragm 12 which fully closes spring 14 and the valve 16, 18 then provides full braking pressure proportional to the vehicle load. The valve may be used with pressure or vacuum braking systems.
