Abstract
Bromobutenes are prepared by heating butene with bromine vapour, e.g. at 300-430 DEG C., at least one mole of butene being present per mole of bromine, and cooling and scrubbing the hydrogen bromide from the vapour mixture with methyl vinyl carbinol or crotyl alcohol, which are converted to bromobutenes as additional product. Bromobutanes and dibromobutanes may also be formed. The product bromobutene may be hydrolysed to a mixture of methyl vinyl carbinol and crotyl alcohol, either of which may be removed as product, the separated isomer being recycled to the scrubbing stage.
