Abstract
Roadways, signs and warning markers, e.g. on bridge abutments, have a permanent reflexreflective coating provided by a sprayable composition comprising a clear cellulose derivative lacquer, a solvent for the lacquer and a plurality of glass beads uniformly distributed therein. The beads have a refractive index from about 1,90-1,95 and a density not greater than about 4,25 g/cc., with 70-90% of the beads of diameter between about 0,0017 inch and 0,0024 inch, and all the beads having diameter less than about 0,0067 inch. The composition comprises about 25 to about 40 volumes of beads with about 75 to about 60 volumes of lacquer. The composition is preferably sprayed from an aerosol container on the surface to be coated, but may be brushed on or roller-coated; it may also contain suspending agents, e.g. phosphatides, alkyl phosphates, metallic stearates or a modified montmorillonite.ALSO:A sprayable composition for the production of a permanent reflex-reflective coating comprises a clear cellulose derivative lacquer, a solvent therefor, and a plurality of glass beads uniformly distributed therein, the beads having a refractive index of about 1,90 to about 1,95 and a density not greater than about 4,25 grams per c.c. and 70 to 90% of the beads having diameters between about 0,0017 inch and 0,0024 inch and all the beads having a diameter less than about 0,0067 inch. The composition comprises about 25 to 40 volumes of beads with about 75 volumes to 60 volumes of lacquer. The composition may include a resinous material, a plasticizer, or other additives, e.g. organic pigments or suspending agents such as phosphaltides, metallic stearates, alkyl phosphates or modified montmorillionite. The lacquer may be, e.g. nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate or butyrate in a solvent such as alcohols, ethers, ketones, esters or hydrocarbons. The composition is perferably sprayed from an aerosol container, or may be brushed on or roller-coated.
