Abstract
917,388. Strengthening glassware. RESEARCH CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1961 [Nov. 15, 1960], No. 38717/61. Class 56. The tensile strength of glass is increased by immersing the glass in a substantially anhydrous fluid bath containing alkali metal ions of greater ionic diameter than the alkali metal ions in the glass, at a temperature not exceeding the strain point of the glass, until a substantial portion of the alkali metal ions in the surface layer of the glass have been replaced by alkali metal ions of greater diameter. In an example, a soda lime glass was immersed in molten KNO 3 at 350‹ C. for 16 hours. Other salts mentioned are NaNO 3 , KSCN, K 2 S 2 O 7 , RbNO 3 and CsNO 3 . The bath may be a melt or a solution of a salt in a non-aqueous solvent, such as acetamide, in which the salt will ionize. Mixtures of salts may be used to reduce the melting-point particularly if one of the components of the mixture is a di- or trivalent metal that cannot diffuse into the glass.
