Abstract
The preparation of blown bitumens comprises contacting, e.g. by blowing, a residual petroleum fraction with oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and inert gases, e.g. air, at 150 DEG to 300 DEG C. in the presence of a small quantity, e.g. 0,1 to 5% by weight based on the total feed stock of a fluid catalyst consisting of an anhydrous solution of phosphorous pentoxide in a phosphoric acid having the general formula HmRnPO4, where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aromatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and where m=1, 2, or 3, and m+n=3. The catalyst may contain 50 to 80% by weight of the P2O5 based on the total catalyst and preferably it contains the greatest quantity consistent with a fluid catalyst solution. The catalyst may be P2O5 in orthophosphoric or methylphosphoric acid, and the residual petroleum fraction may be an atmospheric residue of a Kuwait crude, and a vacuum residue of the same crude.ALSO:The preparation of blown bitumens comprises contacting e.g. by blowing, a residual petroleum fraction with oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and inert gases e.g. air, at 150 DEG to 300 DEG C in the presence of a small quantity e.g. 0,1 to 5% by weight based on the total feedstock of a fluid catalyst consisting of an anhydrous solution of P2O5 in a phosphoric acid having the general formula Hm Rn PO4, where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aromatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and where m=1, 2, or 3, and m+n=3. The catalyst may contain 50 to 80% by weight of the P2O5 based on the total catalyst and preferably it contains the greatest quantity consistent with a fluid catalyst solution. The catalyst may be P2O5 in orthophosphoric or methyl phosphoric acid, and the residual petroleum fraction may be an atmospheric residue of a Kuwait crude, and a vacuum residue of the same crude.
