Abstract

916,140. Making tubular pinned rivets; assembling force fits. OLYMPIC SCREW & RIVET CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1961, No. 36070/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A machine for assembling the sleeve and pin of a drive rivet comprises a first disc 14 having peripheral sleeve carrying stations and intermittent drive, a second disc 13 having peripheral sleeve carrying stations from which sleeves are transferred to the first disc, a third disc 16 placed above the plane of the first and second discs and having peripheral pin carrying stations which position successive pins above successive sleeves, means 19 for downwardly displacing successive pins into partial engagement in the sleeves, and means 20 for further engaging partially engaged pins. Drive mechanism.-Drive is transmitted from a pulley 30 through shaft 31 to gear 32 which drives gears 33 and 36. Gear 36 drives shaft 35 which actuates a cam and air valve mechanism 18. Gear 33 provides drive for the intermittent rotation of three vertical shafts 38, 45, 53 which support the three discs. Gear 33 has a recessed hub 60 containing friction packing 63 on the other side of which is a ratchetwheel 62 keyed to shaft 34. Gear 33 rotates continuously but the ratchet - wheel normally remains stationary due to engagement of its pawl 68, this being made possible by the clutch 60, 64, 62 slipping. However, a lug 61 on the gear hub 60 strikes a roller 71 mounted on the pawl 68 and lifts the pawl from engagement, thus allowing the clutch to transmit rotary drive to the shaft 34 until the next ratchet tooth is engaged by the pawl. Two gears 75 transmit this rotation to a secondary shaft free to rotate on shaft 31, the secondary shaft driving discs 13 and 16 through bevel gears; shaft 34 drives disc 14 directly through bevel gears 72. Rivet and pin feed and assembly.-Pins P are fed down an inclined shoot 15 into the notches 55 on disc 16 and retained therein during rotary transfer to a position below rammer 82 (Fig. 2) by a guide rail 58 (Fig. 1). An identical feed. and transfer system is used to feed rivets F to. a position below both the pin P and the rammer 82, which, by application of compressed air controlled by the means 18, partially enters pins P into rivets F. Final ramming to the required engagement is carried out by a mechanical linkage ram shown in Fig. 5 at the position shown in Fig. 1. A further pneumatic means 21 may be used to place sealing washers under the rivet heads, and the assembled rivets are finally stripped from the disc 14 by an inclined face 22.
