Abstract

A composition of polyvinyl chloride and a polyisocyanate or a substance capable of behaving as a polyisocyanate when heated and an isocyanate-reactive polyester which is completely liquid above 20 DEG C. and preferably above 15 DEG C. is used for coating articles made from natural or synthetic rubbers, polyvinyl chloride, polyamides, polyethylene, polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde resins, leather and wood. In an example a polyester from 1:5-pentanediol, glutaric acid and adipic acid is reacted with 2:4-tolylene diisocyanate, glycerol and diethylene glycol in ethyl acetate. The reaction product (A) is mixed with polyvinyl chloride, calcium stearate, tritolyl phosphate and more polyester to form a plastisol. A cleaned cast polyurethane rubber is painted with the plastisol, further coats of plastisol from which (A) is omitted are applied, and the coating is gelled at 170 DEG C. Specifications 804,839, 807,243 and 842,154 are referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises a composition of polyvinyl chloride and a polyisocyanate or a substance capable of behaving as a polyisocyanate when heated and an isocyanate-reactive polyester which is completely liquid above 20 DEG C. and preferably above 15 DEG C. The polyester is defined as one which is obtained by the condensation of straight-chain aliphatic a ,o -diols and straight-chain aliphatic a ,o -dicarboxylic acids, optionally with up to 20% molar of other diols and dicarboxylic acids, the reagents being chosen so that in the polyester produced the ratio of the total number of carbon atoms present to the total number of oxygen atoms is at least 5 to 2. As compounds which behave as polyisocyanates when heated there may be used the isocyanurate polymers described in Specification 809,809. As coatings the compositions can be applied in a solvent, the isocyanate being added immediately before application. Alternatively the polyester and polyisocyanate may be added to a plastisol or organosol of the polyvinyl chloride. The compositions can also be used for bonding polyvinyl chloride to other materials such as leather and metals. In examples a polyester which is liquid at temperatures above 13,5 DEG C. is prepared from 1:5-pentane diol, glutaric acid and adipic acid and reacted with 2:4-tolylene diisocyanate, glycerol and diethylene glycol in ethyl acetate to give a reaction product (A) containing 75% solids. A plastisol is prepared of paste-making vinyl chloride polymer, calcium stearate, tritolyl phosphate, polyester (as used in making product (A)) and the reaction product (A) itself. The plastisol is used for coating polyethylene terephthalate fabric (see Group VIII). Specifications 804,839, 807,243 and 842,154 also are referred to.
