Abstract

914,563. Hydraulic shock absorbers; railway vehicle draft and bung gear. NATIONAL CASTINGS-CO. Dec. 6, 1960 [Dec. 7, 1959], No. 42011/60. Classes 103(5) and 108(3). A hydraulic shock absorber for railway draft and buffing gear comprises an inner container 4 which is sealed at 17 within an outer reservoir container 2 and slidingly receives a hollow piston 6 having an end wall 28, and a fluid metering device 22 with a hollow tube 22a which extends, with a close fit, through an opening 30 in the end wall 28 and has the inner end of its opening 23 in communication with the reservoir 2. The tube 22a has a pair of longitudinal flutes 50 of varying cross-section formed in its sides so that, during a compression stroke, when a washer 34 slidable on the tube 22a closes openings 32 in the piston end wall 28, fluid in the container 4 is forced through orifices between the flutes 50 and the opening 30. The orifices become progessively smaller as the shock absorber closes with corresponding decreasing speed. During a rotaration stroke a compression spring 46, constrained between a shoulder 48a on a rear end closure plate 48 for the piston 6 and a shoulder 2a on the outer container 2, urges the piston 6 outwardly, the washer 34 being forced away from the openings 32 and into contact with a retaining ring 36 and fluid flowing rapidly through the openings 32 into the container 4. An oil sump 42 within the piston 6 provides lubrication for the cap member 38 of the metering device which has an oil ring 40. The cap member 38 has a projection 38a with radial openings 44 which communicate with the opening 23 in the tube 22a to allow compensation fluid to move in and out of the reservoir 8. Engagement of the cap member 38 respectively with a transverse wall 54 in the piston 6 and the end wall 28 limits the compression and retraction strokes of the shock absorber. The reservoir container 2, provided with a filling opening 12,. has reinforcing ribs 16 which engage the corresponding end of the container 4 and have fluid press openings 20.
