Abstract
903,824. Ceramic-metal seals. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dot. 19, 1960 [Nov. 12, 1959], No. 38440/59. Class 36. In an annular ceramic-metal seal, in which one part surrounds the other, thermal stresses are avoided by using an intermediate metal joined to both parts such that one of the metals has a thermal expansion greater, and the other less, than that of the ceramic so that their combined rate of contraction on cooling equals that of the ceramic. The ceramic may be the inner or outer member, and the cross-sectional areas of the two metals must be chosen such that their combined contraction after sealing equals the contraction of the ceramic. The intermediate metal body may be an annulus of malleable metal and the ceramic surface may be metallized in the region of the seal. This method of forming a seal is especially suitable for sealing a molybdenum rod into an aperture in a high-alumina ceramic body when the intermediate body is a copper sleeve and the brazing metal is a copper-silver eutectic-alloy.
