Abstract
An anti-foaming composition, which is an aqueous emulsion comprising (by weight) 1-60% of a dimethyl polysiloxane oil, 0,1-10% of finely divided silica, preferably having a particle size less than 50m m , and 0,2-10% of polyvinyl alcohol as sole emulsifying agent (see Group IV(a)), can be made by mixing the silica with the siloxane, heating the resulting paste at 100 DEG to 250 DEG C., adding to the cooled paste an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and the requisite amount of water and milling the resulting mixture in a colloid mill. An example is given of the above composition and its properties are compared with similar compositions containing different emulsifying agents.
