Overheating of fuel elements in regions of enhanced flux caused by a local excess of water moderator is avoided by reducing the concentration of fissile material or by providing a neutron absorber in those regions. Fig. 4 shows fuel rods 25 I near a support-plate 20. To avoid overheating in zone I, zone II contains fuel which is less enriched than zone III and may also contain a large proportion of Th232, e.g. as ThO 2 mixed with UO 2 . The Specification also describes the use of control-rod followers containing Th232, or a strong absorber such as B, Hf, Cd in diluted form, the controlrods being boron silicate. Specification 847,902 is referred to.
