Abstract
The invention comprises dimeric p-isopropenylphenol of the isomeric formulae I and II, which compound is prepared by heating p-isopropenylphenol in an inert organic diluent medium (e.g. refluxing in cyclohexane) and separating the product from the reaction mixture. <FORM:0903062/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0903062/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0903062/IV (b)/3> Catalytic hydrogenation of the dimer gives the corresponding saturated bisphenol. On treating the dimeric p-isopropenyphenol with an acid catalyst such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, the indane derivative III is obtained. Specification 988,747 is referred to.
