A cable gland comprises a pair of members adapted to be secured together, at least one of said members having a lining or filling of soft material, such as lead, which is contracted on to the cable by the action of securing the members together. The drawing accompanying the first Provisional Specification (Fig. 1), shows one embodiment in which bush 10, tapered at one end at 16c has a lining 1 of soft material keyed therein by a thread 14b and expanded into an undercut portion 16a, 16b in the portion 16c. The co-operating nut 11 also has a lining 1 keyed therein by a thread 23a and terminating at a tapered surface 22 which contracts the portion 16c and hence the lining 1 of bush 10 on to the cable when the bush and nut are screwed together. The bush and nut may be completely filled with soft material and bored out to size on site. The material in this case may be cast in plain bores in the bush and nut. Alternatively, the lining may be omitted from the nut 11, the bore in the outer end thereof corresponding to that of the lining in the bush. Fig. 4 of the drawing accompanying the Complete Specification shows a gland embodying the latter alternative. Also the nut 19 has an outer portion of uniform diameter instead of being tapered to receive the cable armouring, an outer clamping member 28 in this case contracting collet members 40 on to the cable armouring.
